Sant Jordi Day in Barcelona

What you need to know to enjoy the most romantic and cultural festival

If there is one major celebration in the city of Barcelona, it is Sant Jordi. This tradition, based on the legend of the knight who killed the dragon and saved the princess of Mont Blanc, is typical of Catalonia and is celebrated throughout the region. However, it is true that Barcelona celebrates it in a more large-scale and vibrant way. It is customary to give a red rose as a symbol of love to our partner.

From early in the morning, the streets are filled with stalls selling red roses and books. The city center has the highest concentration of author signings per square meter (Las Ramblas, Passeig de Gràcia, Passeig de Sant Joan, Arc de Triomf), which results in large crowds trying to get close to the book stalls. So, if this is your first Sant Jordi in the city, here are three tips:

Wear very comfortable shoes. You’ll have to walk a lot, so the more comfortable you are, the better.
It gets hot, so bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. You’ll appreciate it by the end of the day.
Watch out for pickpockets! There are always thieves, but on a day with so many people, the risk is higher. Take care of your belongings and stay alert.

As mentioned, many authors take part in book signings. Among them is our professor Cristina Ruiz Gallardo, who, with her three published books, will be signing at Arc de Triomf, 53–55, from 16:00 to 17:30.

Without a doubt, it is well worth going out into the streets of Barcelona on Sant Jordi’s Day and soaking up its joyful atmosphere.

Happy Sant Jordi!
