The Dime School Literary Club has chosen this term the novel El jardín dormido (The Sleeping Garden) by the Catalan writer Carla Gracia Mercadé.
It is a beautiful story of self-discovery and transformation, following a woman as she works to restore an old garden back to life, while confronting the ghosts of her past and overcoming a recent breakup.
In our final session, on March 20th, we had the great fortune of welcoming the author of the novel. It was a special and unique occasion for our students, who were able to ask her, in person, everything that intrigued them. The questions kept coming: How did you come up with the story? Do you know London well? Does the protagonist have anything of you in her? Is the whole story a kind of metaphor of the garden as a person’s life? Is there a reclaiming of silenced female artistic voices?
Carla responded with great generosity, opening her heart on many occasions, and answering each and every question. She then signed the students’ copies and took photos with the group.
It was an afternoon that was as engaging as it was moving. We feel deeply grateful to the author and will undoubtedly include one of her books again in our club next academic year.
