Last Friday, our students from the intensive Spanish course went dragon hunting through the Eixample. Together with our teacher, they walked through the streets of the Eixample neighborhood of Barcelona in search of these fantastic and mysterious creatures.
Barcelona is full of dragons. More than 400 specimens can be found throughout the city. They are made of stone, wrought iron, wood, or mosaic and adorn doors, balconies, or building facades. Sometimes they are hidden in the corners of balconies or attached to lampposts. Most of the dragons we found in the Eixample are from the modernist period. In other parts of the city, we can discover some from the Middle Ages. Some are depicted alongside Sant Jordi, others alone.
Sant Jordi has been the patron saint of Barcelona since 1456, and his legend is known to all the city's inhabitants.
Our students met at the beginning of Passeig de Gracia, in front of Palau Robert, and strolled to Casa Lleó Morera, passing by Casa de les Punxes and the Palacio of the Baron of Quadras. It was a very interesting excursion where they could learn a bit more about the history of Barcelona.
