Last Friday, students from different Spanish courses at Dime enjoyed a wonderful excursion to El Borne. The students discovered many interesting facts about this famous neighborhood in Barcelona and had the opportunity to meet other students from the school.
The excursion began on "Argenteria" street, which means "Silversmith Street," that is, the street of those who work with silver. The very name of the street gave the students clues to uncover one of the main characteristics of this neighborhood: in the past, many of its streets housed different trade guilds. Today, "Carrer Mirallers," "Carrer Flassaders," "Carrer Calders," etc., remind us of this area's history.
We stopped in front of the Santa Maria del Mar Basilica, better known as "The Cathedral of the Sea," a church whose construction began in 1325 and was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the neighborhood's residents. The basilica became famous as the setting for Ildefonso Falcones’ novel The Cathedral of the Sea, which has sold over six million copies and has been translated into numerous languages. Moreover, in 2019, the Netflix platform created a series of the same name, based on the book.
At the end of the excursion, we stopped for a vermouth at a neighborhood bar, the Andorra. We toasted together to this lovely walk!
