Last Friday we organised a very special activity that is always a big success among our students: a vermut in Spanish!
"Ir de vermut" has become a very popular trend in Barcelona. Vermut is a liqueur made from an artisanal blend of wine and aromatic herbs, but the concept of “hacer un vermut” or “going for a vermut” no longer refers only to the drink itself. It now includes the pinchos, olives, anchovies, crisps and other tapas and delicious small dishes that accompany it. It’s an aperitif you can enjoy standing or sitting, but always in good company. Many bars in the city have brought this tradition back and offer their own vermut recipes, competing in quality and flavour. Among all the options, we chose a small, cosy neighbourhood vermutería called La Vermu. It is located in the heart of Gràcia and is easy to recognise thanks to its distinctive red shutters. It was the first time we chose this place for our vermut, and we really enjoyed it. We’ll definitely be back!
Last Friday we met there at 12:30 (the typical vermut time) and filled a long table with students and teachers. Some students already knew each other, but most did not, as they attend different courses at our Spanish school. Some are taking private Spanish lessons, while others are enrolled in extensive Spanish courses at different levels. With a good vermut, some olives and a couple of tapas, any shyness quickly disappeared. Before we knew it, we had spent two hours talking, laughing and joking in Spanish.
Here are some photos from the event.
