This week, the intensive Spanish and Catalan courses have started at our school in Barcelona.

The intensive courses runs from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 10:50 a.m. and includes cultural activities on Fridays. The new addition this year is the intensive Catalan course, designed for all students who want to start speaking Catalan from the beginning.

The Catalan course will last for three weeks, with each week focusing on a didactic unit specifically created by our teacher Cristina Ruiz Gallardo. You can read the program below.

WEEK 1 

Welcome to Barcelona! Survival Kit

You have just arrived in Barcelona and, although you were told that Catalan is very similar to Spanish, it sounds very different and you need to know the basics to survive these first few days. Let's get started!

  • Introductions. First conversations: shopping, doctor, asking for directions, telling time.
  • Grammar: gender and number. Articles. Interrogatives. Present indicative, regular and irregular (everyday use verbs). Pronouns.
  • Vocabulary: alphabet, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, numbers, the classroom, health, basic shopping, the house, the city.
  • Culture class: Visit to the supermarket: shopping in Catalan. Gastronomy.




WEEK 2

 I'm Starting to Get to Know Barcelona

You've been in Barcelona for a few days now and you love the city and the language. You want to learn more vocabulary and, above all, learn to speak in the past tense because you can't tell your Catalan friends about the things you did yesterday. Let's keep going!

  • Leisure. Transportation. Work. Shops. Let's go shopping.
  • Grammar: past tense verbs. Possessive pronouns. Prepositions.
  • Vocabulary: clothing, food, leisure, holidays, work, shops (and their products).
  • Culture class: Common Catalan sayings and idioms. The comedy "Plats Bruts".




WEEK 3 

Getting to Know Barcelona

After two weeks in the city, you're starting to get to know its language and customs. Now it's time to learn more about how to get around the city and discover everything it has to offer. Let's go!

  • Getting around the city, directions. Describing the city. Quantifiers.
  • Determiners. Superlative. Comparatives.
  • Grammar: comparison. Periphrases. Impersonal constructions. Verbs.
  • Culture class: Catalan folklore and music. From the Sardana to the Catalan Rumba and protest songs.
