In July, the students of our intensive Spanish course took a very interesting excursion where they discovered the Roman past of the city.
Together with their teachers, they met near Plaça Catalunya and, during a walk of almost two hours, they toured the old town, stopping at the most interesting points where the Roman remains of the city can be seen. Passing through the Plaça del Viut de Març, they continued to Plaça Sant Jaume, visited the incredible Temple of Augustus, and continued to Plaça del Rei, finally ending at Plaça de la Vila de Madrid. Along the way, they were surprised to enter the courtyard of the Pati Llimona Civic Center, where an important section of the old Roman wall is still preserved. Here, they could better understand the connection between the Roman city and the sea, as the building is located on the section of the wall corresponding to the Sea Gate, which at the time provided access to the Roman port.
During the tour, our teacher Cristina explained to the students information and curiosities about other lesser-known Roman remains, such as the Domus d'Avinyò, a domus located next to the Barcino wall, dating from the 1st to the 4th century A.D., and characterized by a magnificent set of ceiling and wall paintings.
It was an unforgettable journey into the history of the city and its inhabitants.
